peter likes music // 2010

Peter’s grandfather regularly remarks that he believes music continues to get better and better.  Peter has to agree.

Peter liked a lot of things in 2010.  Mostly he liked the music.  let me count the reasons:

favorite 20 albums
top 5 albums
top 5 eps

new favorite song // Girls : “Carolina”

Ready for some devestation?  Possibly the most beautiful song I’ve heard in a long time.  Apparently Girls have been playing it for years (note the date on the video below) but the version coming out on their forthcoming ep is absolutely incredible and can be streamed on Pitchfork.

There’s a slow but dramatic change about halfway through the song that, to me, is reminiscent of the change from side A to side B on “Abbey Road“—when the ominous thunderclouds of (She’s So) Heavy break apart and release the golden rays of Here Comes the Sun.  Though, of course because it’s Girls, in this case it’s more like falling asleep on the rumbling, rhythmic bus and then waking up beyond the avenues to the salt breeze of Ocean Beach and the sweet smile of your best girl.

from the rooftop // Don’t Look Down : Here We Go Magic

The hypnotic art-folk of Luke Vibert’s Here We Go Magic hit the rooftop for the latest of Pitchfork’s “Don’t Look Down” series—check it out here.

keats + yeats // Of Montreal : Cemetery Gates

Of Montreal (with some help from her lady Solange Knowles) rock the gates out of this cemetery on Pitchfork.tv. I particularly enjoyed the reworked version of “Heimdalsgate like a Promethean Curse.”
