Cass McCombs // County Line :
Ready for some devestation? Possibly the most beautiful song I’ve heard in a long time. Apparently Girls have been playing it for years (note the date on the video below) but the version coming out on their forthcoming ep is absolutely incredible and can be streamed on Pitchfork.
There’s a slow but dramatic change about halfway through the song that, to me, is reminiscent of the change from side A to side B on “Abbey Road“—when the ominous thunderclouds of (She’s So) Heavy break apart and release the golden rays of Here Comes the Sun. Though, of course because it’s Girls, in this case it’s more like falling asleep on the rumbling, rhythmic bus and then waking up beyond the avenues to the salt breeze of Ocean Beach and the sweet smile of your best girl.
Small Black // “New Chain” : 2010.10.25
genre noise bliss pop punk
sounds like glass helicopter rides through sun rays. the punks are taking ecstasy. broken glass being vacuumed in slow motion. mixed media gallery show opening party. beach pop delayed through thick atmosphere. new year’s eve 2025.
notes music as art as music.
verdict squaring off nose-to-nose with Tame Impala for album of the year.
